Pioneer AVIC-S1 3.5-Inch Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator Review

Pioneer AVIC-S1 3.5 inch Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First I would like to say that this GPS looks great and is small and compact. The screen is extremely bright. And is made by a reputable company: Pioneer. Here's how I break down this GPS:

PROS:
case looks great, high tech and modern
the screen is very bright
fast SIRFstar III gps reciever
built in lithium battery
has a variety of interesting wallpaper on the menu screens
only 7/10 of an inch thick
lightweight at 7 ounces
hardware buttons: Menu, Map and unusual scroll wheel
bluetooth for handsfree calling and answering
has great carrying case, AC power cord, car cord included
made by pioneer: one of the worlds top technology companies

CONS:
has a limited amount of POI (1.5 Million total for US and CANADA) compared to millions more with others such as tomtom and garmin
silly POI categories such as car dealerships
no phone numbers on POI
unsatisfactory battery life (I only get about 2-3 hours at half brightness)
windshield mounting kit vibrates the device while driving
small fonts on info such as miles to next turn
screen touchscreen is not as responsive as tomtom gps'

Conclusion: I am satisfied with this unit even with its shortcomings. I find myself using my tomtom 300 for long trips and using this device for shorter trips and walking around town. All in all its a beautiful device. Recommended if you can find it for $400 or less

You get what you pay for cheap. This was a gift for my Daughter-in-law at Christmas. She was real happy, until she tried to have it installed. Every place she went wanted to charge a arm and a leg or said the item was not worth installing, because of defects with the alarm going off. So CAUTION you get what you pay for. Chicago, Il.

Plenio VXA-3000 7-inch Portable GPS Navigator Review

Plenio VXA-3000 7-inch Portable GPS Navigator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Some of the cons are bad user manual. It says charge the unit even though there is no internal battery. It has USB ports but no usb cable. There is charger for car but no power adapter if you need to take it home or so. I wish it came with at least those 2 accessories when you are paying 500 for this baby.
However, the gps itself is really great. Inserted the sd card, plugged in the car charger and the unit was ON. It picked up signal immediately. 7 in screen is really great. Tried few addresses and got voice guided directions immediately. Even tried nearest gas station which worked nice. Took some wrong turns and it recalcuated new route instantly.
I think it would be a great buy if you are looking nice GPS. I haven't exercised other features such as mp3 or video but I am really not intersted in them.

Power Acoustik PC1.0F 1.5 Farad Digital Power Capacitor Review

Power Acoustik PC1.0F 1.5 Farad Digital Power Capacitor
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I just can't get over the capacitor trend.I thought 1 F was enough - now they are making 50F caps that resemble car batteries.Do you need it - well, maybe if you are seriously into car audio competition, but this 1.0 (actually the product that shipped was 1.5 Farads) cap is rated for amps to 1000W.

Why use a cap?A capacitor stores a tremendous amount of energy that can be delivered very quickly to your amplifier.Capacitors are also the opposite of inductors.A good example of inductors are LONG WIRES - like the one that carries power from your car battery to your amplifier (and if you are a good installer you have a second wire that returns back to the negative battery terminal and don't use the chassis ground where you pick up noise from turn signals, etc into your audio system)

You see, when a loud "thump" comes down the audio signal cable to the amplifier, it may demand 100-200 amps of power from the battery + alternator for a fraction of a second and send that power into your subwoofer. If your power cable is inductive (a natural property of ALL cables, no matter how big or how fancy or how expensive), then it will resist a sudden change in current - that is the DEFINITION of inductance.By placing a capacitor across the positive and negative terminals of the amplifier in very close physical proximity, it negates the effects of that wire that feeds power to your amp and makes for a more constant voltage. As a result, your bass is cleaner and more defined, your amp does not distort and damage your speakers, and yes, it is louder.Do you need 5, 10, or 50 Farads?No.1-1.5 Farads is more than enough unless you are going for more than 1000 watts.

This unit also has a 3 digit LED display of the voltage (i.e. 13.8 ) in RED LEDs about 1/2 " tall and comes with some acrylic mounting brackets to hold it so you can read the voltage at your amplifier. If you see it bouncing around as your music plays, then you should use a larger capacitor.

Be aware that you can not just "plug it in" - if you do so, the sudden inrush of power into the capacitor will damage it.Follow the instructions on the package to charge the capacitor with a light bulb in series for a few seconds until it reaches 13.8 VDC then remove the bulb. Also NEVER short circuit the capacitor as this can also damage the insides.Use a light bulb or the LED display to drain the power out of it.If you obey these rules, then sparks won't fly.

Finally, the LED display draws 50 mA ALL THE TIME, so in one day it draws 1.2 Amp-Hours from your car's battery if left sitting (there is no "power on" terminal for the display - it is always on).In a month of sitting it will drain your car battery. You may wish to install a relay or battery switch to turn off your stereo (or just remove the fuse) when not using it at the airport parking lot so you can start your car when you get back.

All together I am impressed with this 1.5 Farad cap I received which is not the one shown in the picture.I am using it with a power inverter to produce 120 VAC at 1000 Watts and it works fine, but I have also used them in car stereo installs before when the customer wanted louder, tighter bass from their subwoofer package or was getting distortion or having their amp cut out when the bass was cranked up.The cap will fix the problem for you.

Enjoy in clean health and post some pictures of your install!

Xantrex Power Inverter - 1000 Watt, Model# XM 1000 Review

Xantrex Power Inverter - 1000 Watt, Model# XM 1000
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I own three 1000w inverters and chose not to purchase this model after researching it.I'll explain why and give altnernate choices with similar features and better compatibility. I hope this helps you to make the right decision using my experiences.

The models I own and use daily are my oldest in the fleet from xantrex (prosine 1000) Xantrex Technologies Prosine 1000 Prosine 1,000 to 1,500-Watt Power Inverter, their newer, true sine lower cost model the prowatt SW1000 Prowatt SW1000 1000W True Sinewave Inverter and the most recent low cost true sine 1000W that can't do 1000W from sunforce Sunforce 11240 1000-Watt Pure Sine Wave Inverter with Remote Control.I've used these extensively in remote power operation of tools and equipment where no AC was available in service vehicles.

This model from Xantrex is atypical in that it produces "modified sine wave" power instead of "true sine wave power" like most of thier inverters. The end result to you is that some devices don't mind modified sine wave power, while others can be destroyed by it.Typically modified sine wave power is alot cheaper to produce than true sine wave power, but items with coils like florescent ballasts, transformers, even the big heavy wall transformers will overheat quickly - between an hour and 3 hours.Motors run hot and prolonged use will burn them out, but in an RV say a coffee grinder is only run for a few seconds and doesn't suffer any damage from the modified sine wave.Other sensitive devices are clocks which see the sudden voltage change instead of the smooth voltage change of a sine wave as being a zero crossing, so they count the extra 2 steps in making the waveform as seconds and run 2, 3, or even 6 times faster than normal depending on the clock and inverter.Audio devices powered by 110V like clock radios, ipod adapters with speakers, stereos, all lack filtering for the odd harmonics of 60hz such as 180 hz, 300 hz, 420 hz, and on up.When run frommodified sine waves these sound like alot of low frequency hum is comming out.

You can research "modified sine wave" on google to further pursue it's good points and bad points, but for this review just know it's NOT the same as what comes from your house outlet or a generator.

Also understand that any inverter of this size requires 1/2 - 1.5 Amps just idle.In the Xantrex pro-sine series they installed a powersave function that when not being used (i.e. all 117VAC stuff is off) the inverter checks every 2 seconds to see if anything was switched on, and if so it stays running until the load is switched off. This helps to maximize your runtime on battery and the prosine units can be ordered with the automatic cutover feature offered in this inverter. The sunforce unit has another cute trick - a keyfob transmitter that turns the inverter on/off manually.

The good news about these inverters is that its an optimal switching point for an RV.It can take input power from an RV park or generator and when that is lost because the cord is pulled or the genset runs out of fuel, the inverter kicks in automatically and takes the load. This is a major plus for RV use where power may come from many sources or none at all sometimes.

When producing power from battery I recommend investing in the optima D31M blue top deep cycle battery or 2 in parallel so as to maximize runtime Optima Batteries 8052-161 D31M BlueTop Dual Purpose Battery. These can be drained without damage to the battery while a normal battery may only tolerate total discharge a dozen times in its life before fallout from plate damage collects at the bottom and shorts out 1 cell ruining the battery.I recommend 2 batteries in parallel to share the load because if you approach 1000 watts out, you will see currents in the 105-115 A continuous range from the battery.By putting 2 in parallel connected with heavy (#4) wire you can cut this to 50-60A per battery making them run longer, in fact more than twice as long due to the lower discharge rate. You can also tie into the engine's alternator to source power if it is running but use a battery isolator Warn Industries 28022 120-Amp Dual Battery Isolator to ensure your inverter doesn't leave you without the ability to start the engine by draining power from the engine battery.

In summary I chose all of my inverters to output true sinewave power - just like you get at work or home."Modified sine wave" power can be used for simple loads but read up on it with google prior to choosing it to wire into your RV.You don't want to smell your ipod adapter melting after an hour's use on the inverter or find that setting the microwave for 10 minutes gets done in just 3 because the clock runs fast on modified sine wave power. Also keep in mind 100+ amp current needs #4 wire or better depending on the distance.Preferably keep the 2 batteries and inverter all next to each other so the runs are < 3 feet of wire.If you feel that you want genuine sinewave power in your RV check out the options to the prosine series. They make this exact design in TRUE sinewave power like you get from the utility company including a power save function and with a cutover feature just like this unit has.The only difference is your power will be as good or better than what comes from your outlet at home.
